The epic Safari Rally is finished for another two years. This year’s rally was as challenging as ever, with major retirements early on, including 6-time winner, Bjorn Waldegard, when he rolled his Tuthill Porsche at high speed. Still, the EB parts fitted to his car survived!
EB Motorsport had a plethora of its parts on the Porsche 911s being rallied in Kenya for this event, and the proof of our parts quality can be seen in the survivors.
Tuthill Porsche took 18 cars to Safari, most of which reached the finish. Drivers reported a variety of conditions and some non-Tuthill pilots claimed this was rougher than Paris Dakar: too much for a classic car event. Blomqvist and Marcy up front showed the Tuthill cars were more than capable of running hard and surviving – with no EB bumpers hanging off!
Bernard Munster and BMA Autosport had a pair of 911s in the event, built using EB Motorsport parts. Gregoire de Mevius and Alain Guehennec raced hard until the final day, when they took a steady pace and claimed eighth place overall.
“On the first section today we went quite fast,” said Gregoire. “I had some good times on the Taita Hills, but then we backed off because there is little point – the others were too far away to catch. The second section was quite nice but the third was really a bit rough and there was a big mud hole right in the middle that we managed to avoid. This car was amazing – if it had not been for that one drive shaft, I think we could have been on the podium.”
Nothing tests cars harder than Safari. To have 14 911s finish in the top 20, most of which were built with EB Motorsports parts and still look more than presentable is super impressive. Roll on 2015!
