Historic Racing Highs and Lows: EB at Spa 6 Hours

This year’s Spa 6 Hours delivered an up and down weekend for EB Motorsport.

Both of our cars went very well in qualifying, with a class pole for the 1974 3.0 RS in Masters Historics and a P2 start position for our 1965 2-litre in the 6-Hour endurance: easily our favourite race on the European historic racing calendar.

The 6 Hour endurance was first to be run and we had a great start to the race. The SWB 911 overtook the sole Porsche in front of us and Mark set an excellent pace, with the fastest race lap by any 911 all weekend of 3:04.2.

As the race went on, it became clear that all was not right with the electrics. Eventually, we discovered that the alternator was on its way out, so there was nothing to do but retire. Losing the opportunity to repeat our excellent 2015 finishing position of first 911 home was a disappointment, but we will be back next year.

Things went better in the Masters Historic Sports Cars race. Starting from pole, the Guards Red 3.0 RS ran like a Swiss watch and led from start to finish, securing the class win and claiming maximum championship points, which slightly dampened the pain of losing the 6-Hour victory.

One more Masters Historic championship round remains, in Estoril, Portugal. We did not race a full season and are therefore too far off the leaders to win the series on points, but you know racers: we may still be there.
